The storage specialist WD has announced the global availability of Ultrastar and WD Gold hard drives with 16 and 18 terabytes of capacity. They cover various areas of application from SMB storage to hyperscale implementations. Western Digital is now also offering the WD Gold series in versions with 16 and 18 terabytes of storage space. For this purpose, the manufacturer uses the CMR technology ("Conventional Magnetic Recording") of the Ultrastar series, which is already available with a capacity of up to 20 terabytes. The WD-Gold drives are designed for use in small and medium-sized businesses that require reliable storage for large amounts of data and enterprise applications.
According to the manufacturer, the MTBF of the new WD Gold hard drives is 2.5 million hours. In addition, integrated vibration protection technology ensures consistent performance. The WD Gold HDDs are suitable for workloads of up to 550 terabytes per year and use Western Digital's in-house HelioSeal technology. In addition, the hard disks of the Ultrastar DC HC550 series are now also available with 16 and 18 terabytes of storage capacity .
Platforms and servers expanded
In addition to the individual drives, the manufacturer has also expanded its Ultrastar platform and storage server. The Data60 and Data102 JBoDs as well as the hybrid storage server Serv60 + 8 are now also compatible with the new drives. In total, storage space of up to 1.836 petabytes can be realized in a 4U 19-inch housing.
Western Digital has also introduced two new technologies for these platforms: IsoVibe vibration isolation ensures reliability, while ArcticFlow cooling technology ensures lower temperatures than in conventional systems. According to the manufacturer, the combination of both technologies has been shown to reduce the return rate of hard drives by 62 percent compared to the previous generation.
My Cloud
My Cloud is a well-developed application, with an easy-to-use interface. The configuration is simple: just enter a 12-digit code, which can be obtained from the WD My Cloud administration page, and the connection will be made automatically. Once connected, you will be able to access your files even if you are away from home on a 3G network.
On smartphones and tablets, access to files stored on the WD My Cloud is due to the My Cloud application, available for Android and iOS - Windows Phone has an application called WD 2go, which brings the main functions.
NAS features are no exception. You can create private shares, back up Macs via Time Machine, access media files via DLNA and create a shared iTunes library on the network. It is also possible to access your files from anywhere in the world over the internet, through wdmycloud.com - which, inexplicably, requires the Java plugin to work.
When a USB stick or external hard drive is connected to the WD My Cloud, on the USB 3.0 port, there are two possibilities. The first, most common, is to allow all content on that external storage to be available on the network. The second is to use it as a Safepoint device: you can save 'security points' to save all content that is on WD My Cloud. Thus, in case the NAS HD fails, there is a way to recover the data from the backup.
Back in 2013 Sony launched the PlayStation 4, the original launch model sported only a 500GB hard drive which can very quickly become clogged up with some of the AAA titles of today. That's where today's review sample steps up to the plate. Available in both 2TB and 4TB capacities, the Western Digital Gaming Drive offers users the ability to store roughly 50 or 100 extra games (averaging games at 35GB) with a simple setup process.
The WD Gaming Drive is compatible with all models of the PS4 and PS4 Pro and arrives in a stylish black and blue enclosure. The casing measures in at 110mm x 82mm with the 2TB being 13mm thick and the 4TB at 21mm. Western Digital have developed the enclosure to provide durability and shock resistance for proper long-term reliability, all of which is backed by a 3-year warranty. Of course, since the initial launch, Sony have addressed the issue of limited storage space with 1TB and 2TB models available, and they also offer the ability to swap out the HDD for a larger model. However, that option comes with a couple of pitfalls, one of which is the process of reinstalling the console's operating system and the other being that the existing HDD will likely go to waste. Western Digital's solution aims to offer a much less problematic solution while also allowing you to take your games library with you.
Western Digital Elements Set Up
The Elements drives are plug-and-play, meaning the necessary drivers to run them are included with your operating system. Out of the box, the drives are set to work with Windows 7, 8.1 and 10. It'll work with macOS, too, but you'll need to reformat the drive.
Plugging in the USB 3.0 micro B connector - the one that looks like two micro USB connectors smooshed together - results in a surprisingly satisfying click. The teeth that seal the connection grab on tight and don't let go, which is reassuring with a portable drive.
Capacity-wise, you get four options: 1TB, 2TB, 3TB and 4TB. Western Digital advertises 250GB, 500GB and 1.5TB options on its website, too, but we weren't able to find them. Though a decent spread, we'd urge you to stay in the 1TB-2TB range. The drives spin at 5,400 rpm, so larger capacities will be noticeably slower, especially when filled with data.
The 3TB and 4TB capacities are better suited with the Western Digital My Book, which starts at 3TB and goes up to 20TB. Though the Western Digital Green drive inside each My Book still spins at 5,400 rpm, the drives include Western Digital's backup utility, making them better for large, local backups rather than convenient file transfers.
Like most of Western Digital's products, there's a limited warranty with your Elements drive. In this case, you get two years from the date of purchase to file for a repair or replacement, but as with almost all limited warranties, damage you inflict on the drive isn't covered.
