Taking biotechnology in the service of beauty one step further, Lifeline Skin Care has developed a nonembryonic stem cell extract that it says reduces skin wrinkles, improves tone, and aids elasticity. In November 2010, the firm incorporated the extract into its own skin care line and offered it for sale on the Internet. The Defensive Day Moisture Serum and the Recovery Night Moisture Serum cost $160 and $190, respectively, for a 45-day supply. Through March, the firm had serum sales of $1 million, says President Ruslan Semechkin.
Good old water, aka H2O. The most common skincare ingredient of all. You can usually find it right in the very first spot of the ingredient list, meaning it's the biggest thing out of all the stuff that makes up the product.
It's mainly a solvent for ingredients that do not like to dissolve in oils but rather in water
Associating stem cells with cosmetic ingredients 'risks trivializing' the field of stem cell research, says Mary Dev-ereaux, a bioethicist at the University of California, San Diego. Semechkin admits that International Stem Cell Corp. (ISCO), Lifeline's parent, developed the skin care line to bring in new revenues. But the profits go to furthering the start-up firm's main thrust: developing parthenogenic stem cell lines to cure diseases. And because the egg cells are not fertilized, they avoid complications associated with the destruction of human embryos, Semechkin argues.
Devereaux, who has worked with ISCO as a consultant, wonders whether the firm has obtained consent to use the cells for cosmetic purposes from women who have donated the eggs. Semechkin tells C&EN that although the women who donate eggs do so to advance treatment of human diseases, they are also informed about the cosmetic use. 'We are transparent with them,' he says.
While the stem cells we just discussed are still pluripotent, scientists get to work to extract the anti-aging growth factors, peptides, cytokines and enzymes to use in the Lifeline stem cell skincare serums. Now here is where I'd like you to remember one important fact which I'll get back to. What I'll get back to is the REAL secret of why the Lifeline stem cell skincare products are so much more effective than their competitors.
It has to do with the medium the cells are grown in and what is done (or not done) with the medium and the cells by the real experts at Lifeline versus the so-called experts at other companies. It's a bit 'scientific' so I'm saving it for you die-hard science-of-skincare fans. Additionally, if you stick with me, you'll get a gift!
Petri dish studies have found that the stem cell extracts in Lifeline stem cell skincare products increase the production of important anti-aging proteins including well-known proteins such as collagen and elastin, as well as the lesser-known fibroblast and epidermal growth factors.
Because the cells are multiple generations from the source, adult stem cells (such as from blood, skin, fat or bone marrow) are less potent and therefore less effective than stem cells closer to the original egg. The growth factors extracted from any adult stem cells have markedly less efficacy regarding any proliferation of new skin cells.
Adult stem cells are in most human organs and tissues, including the skin. If we look at the 5 top selling brands we see (in no particular order as LL is at the top in most reviews including getting their Lifeline Proplus day serum named #1 anti-aging skin care product from Truth in Aging):
TNS by SkinMedica (Allergan)- Human neonatal fibroblasts (not stem cells but they do make cytokines in culture) $270/per ounce
U Autologous by PCS-Your own fat (human adipose derived stem cells) $3000 per ounce (Holy way-too-expensive Batman!)
Blue Horizon-Human placenta & cord blood stem cells-$295/ per ounce
AnteAge by Cellese Regenerative Therapeutics-Adult (youth) human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells-$150-$200 per ounce
Lifeline by International Stem Cell Corporation-Human parthenogenetic stem cells from an unfertilized embryo-$190 per ounce. Note: This isn't even the Proplus line which is being re-formulated to be even stronger and will likely be cost-comparable.
Yes, I reviewed, tried and sampled out all of the above before deciding on the Lifeline Stem Cell Skin care line for myself, my patients and my AWS clients. The verdict-much more firmness, fewer lines, and more overall skin appeal! What is the secret of what goes on with the medium?? None of the Lifeline stem cell skincare competitors listed above 'do it' right. Not one-stay tuned.
Know Where The Stem Cells Come From Before You Buy Skin Care Products
Lifeline stem cell skincare is a totally new way to treat wrinkles, age spots, and sagging 'unfirm' skin. It truly blows away the competition. Here's another not-the-real-secret-yet reason. Lifeline® Skin Care uses nanotechnology.
By doing so, they can make teensy little sub-microscopic molecules which are able to penetrate down to the epidermal junction. I can't use the word 'dermis' for a non-drug topical product. The products deliver the 'good stuff' from the stem cell extracts right to the area where collagen and elastin are made. It is the only stem cell product which delivers the goodies right to where it will be most effective! Once in the 'special place,' the stem cell extracts 'communicate' with your skin cells. This results in a proliferation of new skin cells. Scientific studies confirm what you will see in the mirror.
A 77% reduction in wrinkle length and depth in 3 months. You will also see lifting, firmness, and brightness (luminescence). Your skin will just plain look and behave like younger skin. In fact, 90% of study participants noticed firmer, tighter skin. In addition, 59% saw a visible reduction of lines and wrinkles. 87% said that their appearance was noticeably improved. If these products are not part of your anti aging skin care regimen, why not?
How to tighten skin without surgery? It's the only way we know. What about the types of acne scars that are not too deep but still bothersome, will these products help? Yes, indeed. So, it's now time for the real, scientific secret that sets this product light years apart, as if what you just read didn't do that already!
The Secret
It's about the process of how the cells grow, what they grow in, and what they do with the two things I mention above. The process is a bit complex, but I'll break it down step by step.
It is 'accepted science' that stem cells are grown in petri dishes which contain a complex 'goo' of nourishing things we'll call culture media. In return, that culture media is immediately filled with cellular products which are ejected by the stem cell cytoplasm.
The stem cells eject what they wish to try to control their environment into the culture media. This culture media is then dubbed 'conditioned media.' The cellular products ejected into the 'conditioned media' are comprised of a small number of 'helpful' things like growth factors, as well as cellular waste products which can have deleterious effects on your skin.
Virtually every single stem cell product on the market OTHER THAN Lifeline Stem Cell skincare products are made using stem cells grown and harvested in conditioned media and what's worse, the companies which do this, advertise it to the unknowing public as if it's a GOOD THING! 'Conditioned media is the name given to the 'spent' nutrient broth in which cells have been cultured. It contains the biosignals produced by the cells during culture' according to the Anteage folks who then use this conditioned media to make their products- same as the 'other guys.'
I'll get back to why it's most definitely not a good method but first will tell you how Lifeline does it right.
As soon a the parthenogenic stem cells undergo a few divisions, the Lifeline scientists scoop them out of the culture media before they have a chance to 'spit out' anything. This is then a cellular extract which then turns into a cellular lysate preparation. So, what does this mean? In short, lysing cells means breaking open the cells and separating the soluble components (proteins) from the non-soluble ones (cell membranes, fragments of organoids, chromosomes).
They are thereby extracting all of the factors present in the cytoplasm, (not just what the cells choose to excrete). This produces a much more concentrated solution than the conditioned media.
The next step is to 'keep the good' and 'eliminate the bad.' This step is essential because the lysate liquid may contain over 5000 different proteins and peptides including some undesirable substances such as DNA, unsoluble molecules, large molecular weight biopolymers, etc.
The unwanted substances are removed using an ultracentrifuge, leaving only the low molecular weight proteins and peptides (which are just smaller protein molecules). This is what Lifeline then calls their usable cellular extract, consisting of a mixture of approximately 2,000 proteins and peptides. About 100 of these are found in significant concentrations. The most important of these proteins are the growth factors (FGF2, EGF
The last step in the process is to stabilize the extract. This means that they then take even more time and care to remove water from around the proteins so that they don't have a degradation in efficacy over time. As a result, this gives the finished products a stable 'shelf life' and eliminates the chance of bacteria.
Finally, as a part of the last step, they encapsulate the liposomes which does several beneficial things. It stunts and prevents bacterial growth, protects the important protein factors and antioxidants from UV or oxidative damage and serves as a more effective delivery system to further improve absorption of active ingredients.
LL takes these extra steps, and they are still the most cost-effective of the leading products! Amazing!
